Syria's foreign minister said recently that his country was working to rebuild its diplomatic relationship with the United States. Walid al-Muallem told reporters during a visit to London that Syria considered a visit by US special Middle East envoy George Mitchell to Damascus as "the first step toward dialogue," according to the London-based daily ASHARQ AL AWSAT and others the following day. Mitchell's visit to Syria was part of the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama's efforts to engage Syria and prod it into playing a US-friendly role in the region. Syria is seen as a major player in the region because of its support for the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which controls Gaza, its backing for Hizbullah in Lebanon, and its intermittent indirect peace talks with Israel. Syria also maintains close links with Iran, whose disputed nuclear program is a matter of international concern. Muallem said Syria would lobby Mitchell on the issue of the Golan Heights--a strategic plateau seized by Israel in 1967 and which Syria wants back, according to ASHARQ AL AWSAT. Asked if a visit by President Barack Obama to Syria is being planned, he said there is no formal invitation, but that "we welcome Obama if he wishes to come."
